STEROIDAL SAPONINS OF COSTUS LACERUS

UMA PRAWAT ,a PITTAYA TUNTIWACHWUTTIKUL ,b AND WALTER C. TAYLORc

ABSTRACT: Acid hydrolysis of the rhizomes of Costus lacerus Gagn. yielded diosgenin in 1.7 percent. The 95% ethanolic extract of the rhizomes yielded -sitosterol--D-glucoside, prosapogenin A, dioscin and graciIIin. Partial hydrolysis of graciIIin gave the new saponin, 3-0-[-D-glucopyranosyI-(1 3)]-[-D-glucopyranosyl] diosgenin.
