NEUROTRANSMITIER SYSTEMS IN THE VERTEBRATE RETINA

THYON CHENTANEZ and DIANA A. REDBURNa

ABSTRACT: Retina putative neurotransmitters, namely, acetylcholine (Ach), gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), dopamine (DA), and several amino acid putative neurotransmitters, concerning their anatomical distribution, their synthesis, storage, release, action, termination of activity, and their electrophysiological properties in the retina are reviewed. In addition, specific roles of these neurotransmitters in certain synoptic layers of the retina are also included.
